Adekunle Gold, Adeyanju, Segalink knock FG over charges against Sowore
Some well-meaning Nigerians have criticised the Federal Government over the seven counts of treasonable felony and money laundering charges against the Convener of #RevolutionNow protest, Mr. Omoyele Sowore.
Social media influencers and celebrities like Don Jazzy, Adekunle Gold, Adeyanju, Segun Segalink Awosanya, activist Deji Adeyanju, Reno Omokri, Japheth Omojuwa amongst others took to their Twitter handle to air their grievances over the “disgraceful, abhorrent, unconscionable charges.’
The concerned Nigerians opined that the charges against Sowore did not hold ground and as such condemned it in its entirety.
Some also noted that the Buhari led government has a dangerous precedent of stifling opposition voices and imprisoning anyone who does not take sides with them.
Activist Adeyanju said; “Everyone wants you to take a side with them & once you refuse or criticize them, you are a fraud. PDP & APC want u to take a stand with them. Even IPOB. Once you criticize or interrogate their narrative, you are an enemy.
Musician producer, Don Jazzy, also reacting, warned Nigerians about accepting a precedent where dissenting voices are silenced.
He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to free Sowore.
He said, “This dangerous precedent of stifling opposition voices and dissenting opinions has survived enough.
“Let’s not pretend our nascent democracy isn’t being sabotaged when citizens shudder at the thought of people they elected into power.
“I plead for Sowore, #FreeSowore.
“It’s really sad to watch. The young man means well for our dear Nigeria. Who is next? I plead for Sowore #FreeSowore.”
End SARS champion, Segalink, on his part, posted photos of all Nigeran activists in prison and said; “History is replete with the pattern of how despots always find pretext for their tyranny.
“The FG charges against @YeleSowore is disgraceful, abhorrent, unconscionable and mocks every fibre of our humanity and democracy.
“Release all political prisoners and serve the people.”
Adekunle Gold, described the charges against Sowore as fictional.
He said, “I really don’t want to believe those fictional charges against Sowore. Treasonable what? That must be a joke.”
Sowore, publisher of SaharaReporters and a presidential candidate in the February 2019 presidential election was charged along with Olawale Bakare, also known as Mandate.
In the charges instituted against the defendants, the prosecution accused Sowore and his co-defendant of committing conspiracy to commit treasonable felony in breach of section 516 of the Criminal Code Act by allegedly staging “a revolution campaign on September 5, 2019 aimed at removing the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
It also accused Sowore of cybercrime offences in violation of section 24(1)(b) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention) Act, by “knowingly” sending “messages by means of press interview granted on Arise Television network which you knew to be false for the purpose of causing insult, enmity, hatred and ill-will on the person of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”
It also accused Sowore of money laundering offences in breach of section 15(1) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2011.

If citizens are now being charged for insulting the president, what’s left of Nigeria’s democracy? Free Sowore already. This is beyond embarrassing. I don’t even remember any previous Nigerian dictator who charged any citizen for insulting him. Not even Buhari as a military ruler https://t.co/XoElLUVkmu

It’s 50 days today since Dadiyata went missing. Sowore has now spent 49 days in DSS detention. Stephen Kefas has clocked 123 days in a Kaduna prison over a Facebook post. Agba Jalingo is being charged for treason as Jones Abiri remains locked up. We cannot continue like this… pic.twitter.com/9g418vdGHx

My heart prays for OMOYELE SOWORE this morning as I find it painful that a man who carried no weapon is in detention while those who terrorize others are being massaged like new born babies. Pls join me in pleading with the Federal Government to dialogue with SOWORE like others!
