The African Democratic Congress has declared a three-day mourning period to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died in London on Sunday.
The party’s Interim National Chairman, Senator David Mark, announced the decision in a statement released on Monday in Kano.
Mark said Buhari’s life reflected discipline, commitment, and deep patriotism, adding that he served Nigeria faithfully both as a soldier and a civilian leader.
“President Muhammadu Buhari was a statesman of exceptional character. As a soldier, he fought bravely to preserve the unity and territorial integrity of our nation,” Mark said.
He added, “As a democratically elected president, he contributed significantly to the growth and consolidation of democratic governance in Nigeria.”
Mark also said that all party activities at both national and state levels are suspended during the mourning period.
He urged the federal government to immortalise Buhari, suggesting the establishment of monuments, institutions, or initiatives to preserve his legacy.
“We believe it is only fitting that his name and contributions be etched permanently into the national memory,” he stated.
The ADC extended condolences to the Buhari family, the federal government, and all Nigerians mourning the late leader.
Mark urged all ADC members and supporters across Nigeria to observe the mourning period with respect and solemnity.
