The African Democratic Congress has rejected allegations linking it to any particular political figure as preparations for the 2027 presidential election gather pace, reiterating that its platform remains accessible to all interested aspirants.
During an appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, refuted claims that the ADC is being positioned as a political vehicle for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar or any other contender.
“We will not be blackmailed into a premature decision. Zoning is on the table, and we are having strategic conversations, but I am not in a position to reveal those details yet,” he said on Wednesday.
Abdullahi emphasized that the party has not endorsed any candidate at this stage, noting that this stance equally applies to other notable figures such as Peter Obi and Rotimi Amaechi who may seek to contest under the party’s banner.
“Definitely not. People will believe what they want, but I am telling you this has absolutely nothing to do with Atiku Abubakar any more than it has to do with Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, or anyone else who might want to contest on our platform,” he added.
He explained that the ADC’s priority is to develop an inclusive political movement rather than advance the ambition of a single individual. According to him, deliberations within the party—including discussions on zoning its presidential ticket—are still ongoing.
The spokesperson further stated that decisions on critical matters would be made at the right time, stressing that the party would resist pressure to rush conclusions on issues requiring broad internal agreement.
Abdullahi also called on opposition groups to close ranks, cautioning that internal divisions could ultimately benefit the ruling party and weaken democratic competition as the 2027 elections approach.
