Veteran Nigerian singer and political activist, Charles Chukwuemeka Oputa, popularly known as Charly Boy, has criticised the recently formed opposition coalition, describing its members as recycled politicians disguised in new attire.
His comments come after prominent opposition figures, including former Senate President David Mark, officially adopted the African Democratic Congress as their political platform to challenge President Bola Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress in the 2027 general elections.
While the move has sparked excitement among some Nigerians hopeful for change, others remain doubtful of the coalition’s motives, questioning whether it truly represents a break from the past.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, Charly Boy expressed strong skepticism, arguing that those leading the coalition are the same individuals responsible for Nigeria’s problems.
“It’s just old wolves in the new agbada,” he wrote.
“Coalitions are forming, but let’s not pretend that every alliance is progress. Sometimes, it’s just old wolves in new agbada.”
“Are they fighting for you, or fighting to sit where their enemies used to sit?”
“Are they shouting ‘enough is enough’ because they’ve changed… Or because they’re no longer the ones benefitting?”
“We don’t just need new names. We need new values, new visions, and people with the guts to live by them. 2027 is not about revenge. It’s about rescue,” he added.
