The Ogun State chapter of the African Democratic Congress says it is awaiting possible contact from Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello, amid growing speculation that she may use the party as a platform for her anticipated return to politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

A political source who spoke to Punch disclosed that the former Ogun Central senator, and first daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, is being linked to the ADC as her possible preferred party.

This comes after campaign-style billboards bearing her image appeared in several locations in Abeokuta, including Abiola Way near the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library and the Brewery Junction axis.

Obasanjo-Bello, who served in the Senate between 2007 and 2011 and now resides in the United States, was depicted on the billboards alongside the inscription: “In Ogun State we know ourselves. Senator (Prof) Iyabo Obasanjo. Omo wa ni, eniyan wa ni, ara wa ni.”

The development has led to suggestions among political observers that she may be positioning herself for another run, possibly under the ADC.

The political source further noted that, “Although the former senator is yet to openly declare her next political move, this is speculated to be around the Ogun Central Senatorial race, and the likely party is the ADC.

“You will remember that the former president in 2019 gave tactical support to the ADC. So, many believe the former senator will likely pursue her next political ambition with the ADC. That is the thinking out there.”

Reacting to the speculation, the Ogun State ADC Chairman, Otunba Femi Soluade, confirmed awareness of the discussions but said there has been no direct communication from Obasanjo-Bello.

He stated, “Senator Iyabo Obasanjo-Bello is yet to make overtures to us. Nevertheless, we are waiting for her to talk to us. Opinions abound about the post she might be gunning for in 2027, but we are watching. Maybe in the coming days, I will discuss her matter with our executive and revert as soon as there is information.”

Soluade added that the party intends to consult its leadership once there is clarity on her intentions.
