Adamawa state has recorded its first confirmed case of the novel Corona Virus Disease.
The index case is a journalist, name withheld, who writes for the Daily Trust Newspaper.
He is said to be middle-aged who recently just returned from Kano and went into self-isolation after suffering from bouts of cough.
He afterwards submitted himself for screening to health officials who took his blood samples for testing.
However, health officials with the state COVID-19 response team on this morning after his samples were confirmed positive and took him to the state isolation centre.
The journalist who spoke with his colleagues from the State COVID-19 isolation centre said:
“Officials of the state COVID-19 containment have informed me that my samples tested positive for the virus.”
Bashiru Ahmad, chairman of the state COVID- 19 containment committee had yet to respond to calls to confirm the first case.
Only yesterday, in an interview with The PUNCH, Bashiru, had faulted the absence of commitment on the part of security agencies to stop the spread of the novel Corona Virus Disease.
The journalist had travelled in his private car to Yola exactly, a week ago, when the state was completely lockdown, before the relaxation of the lockdown restriction by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri, to allow free intra-state movement while closing it’s borders to inter-states travels.
Since it had yet to record any case.
Bashiru had lamented the entry of several travellers into the state when her borders and that of neighbouring states like Gombe and Taraba were supposedly closed.
He blamed the laxity to enforce the reviewed regulations to stop entry into the state on compromised security officials, saying:
” It is out of sheer luck that the state had yet to record any confirmed case of COVID-19.”
This he attributed to the threat posed by the failure of security agencies to ensure compliance to lockdown regulations to stop the spread of COVID-19.
