Lupita Nyong’o, the Oscar-winning actress of the hit movie “Black Panther” recently revealed the end of her relationship with Selema Masekela, an American sports commentator and the son of the late South African musician Hugh Masekela.
Their breakup occurred less than a year after they made their relationship official, and Lupita cited “deception” as the reason for their separation.
In an Instagram post, Lupita explained her decision to share the news publicly, despite the heartache it brings: “I am tempted to run into the shadows and hide, only to return to the light when I have regained my strength enough for me to say, ‘Whatever, my life is better this way.’
“But I am reminded that the magnitude of the pain I am feeling is equal to the measure of my capacity for love. And so, I am choosing to face the pain, cultivating the courage to meet my life exactly as it is, and trusting that this too shall pass.”
Lupita expressed her hope that discussing her breakup would help others facing heartbreak and prevent them from missing out on the wisdom that can come from such experiences: “The promise, they say, is that a tender heart is what gives birth to fearlessness.”
The former couple’s connection goes back several years, with Selema admitting to having a crush on Lupita Nyong’o in 2016.
Their romance had become a reality by March 2022, and they made their relationship Instagram official in December 2022.
Lupita celebrated Selema’s birthday in August, describing him as her favorite playmate, and he called himself the “luckiest man alive.”
Selema Masekela has not yet publicly commented on the breakup.
