Nollywood actress and filmmaker Kiitan Bukola has explained that her movie series, Oshofreee, was created to examine the realities and consequences of prostitution. However, it was not created to promote the lifestyle.
The actress said the production was inspired by her desire to tell stories reflecting experiences that society often overlooks.
According to The PUNCH, Bukola made the disclosure during an interview with Saturday Beats. There, she discussed the film’s message and her experiences as an independent filmmaker.
She explained that the central character’s apparent lifestyle differs from the struggles she experiences privately.
“My message is simple: telling a story about something is not the same as promoting it,” she said.
Bukola added that the character’s experiences demonstrate why prostitution should not be viewed as a reliable route to success. Furthermore, it should not be seen as a path to personal fulfilment.
The filmmaker urged young people to consider the consequences of lifestyles that may appear attractive from a distance.
Discussing the business of filmmaking, she said millions of views on YouTube did not necessarily guarantee substantial earnings.
Bukola explained that revenue also depended on monetisation, audience location, sponsorships and production costs.
She added that investing in her own productions had required financial sacrifices but had taught her patience, confidence and independence.
The actress maintained that her goal was to create stories that entertained audiences while encouraging reflection on important social issues.
