The Kaduna State Police Command has said that the death of a 12-year-old boy in the Abakpa area of the state was caused by an accidental gunshot, not a bomb explosion as earlier reported.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Mansir Hassan, explained in a statement that a locally made gun, also known as a Dane gun, went off by accident around 8:30 am on Tuesday at Josawa Road, Abakpa.
The victim, identified as Abubakar Muhammed, died on the spot, while seven other people suffered different degrees of injuries.
Hassan said that the police began an investigation immediately after getting a distress call. A team made up of officers from the Kawo Division, the Anti-Bomb Squad, the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Chairman of Kaduna North Local Government all visited the scene to carry out an on-site inspection.
He said early findings from the Anti-Bomb Squad confirmed that the tragic incident was not caused by any explosive device.
The police also said that more investigations are being carried out to understand exactly what led to the discharge of the gun.
The Command promised to keep the public informed as the investigation continues and assured that the matter is being handled with seriousness.
