The Nigerian military has defended its actions following the Christmas Day airstrike in Silame Local Government Area, Sokoto State, that mistakenly killed at least 10 civilians and injured several others.

The airstrike, aimed at neutralizing Lakurawa terrorists, accidentally hit the Gidan Sama and Rumtuwa communities.

The Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, during his visit to the 8 Division Headquarters in Sokoto, insisted the tragedy was linked to residents allegedly harbouring criminals.

General Musa warned civilians to avoid associating with or sheltering terrorists.

“Anyone harbouring criminals is making themselves a legitimate target. Do not live with them or give them any form of support,” he said.

While acknowledging the incident, Musa assured that an investigation was underway.

“We did our homework and have video evidence of what happened. If mistakes occurred, we will address them. But communities must avoid harbouring terrorists,” he added.

Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Ahmed Aliyu, expressed sadness over the accidental bombing and visited the affected communities to offer condolences.

“This heartbreaking event has claimed innocent lives and caused great pain. On behalf of the Sokoto State government, I offer my deepest condolences to the families of the victims,” he said.

Aliyu announced a N20 million donation and 100 bags of food for the grieving families, while pledging collaboration with the military for a thorough investigation.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar condemned the incident, describing it as “devastating and outrageous.”

“The indiscriminate killing of innocent citizens is a gross violation of humanity. Military operations must be precise and based on irrefutable intelligence,” Atiku stated.

Ex-governor and Senator Aminu Tambuwal also criticized the airstrike, calling it “deeply upsetting.”

“The victims were innocent, hardworking citizens. This tragedy underscores the need for military operations to prioritize civilian safety,” Tambuwal said, urging a comprehensive investigation.

General Musa praised the troops for their dedication during his visit to Operation FASAN YAMMA.

“Your commitment to safeguarding Nigeria is inspiring. We will continue to provide resources and support to ensure victory in all operations,” he said.

He also urged neighbouring countries, including Niger and Chad, to cooperate in combating regional security threats.

The National Emergency Management Agency confirmed the fatalities and injuries in a statement, while affected residents called for justice.
