The newly elected Chairman of the FCT chapter of the Association of Movie Producers, Desmond Utomwen, has outlined an ambitious plan to reposition the Federal Capital Territory as a leading hub for film production in Nigeria.
Speaking during his inaugural address, Utomwen said, “My victory was born out of a passion to transform the FCT into a thriving film hub.”
His emergence follows a keenly contested election in which he defeated his opponent, Chukwudi Uzochukwu.
A seasoned filmmaker and staunch advocate for the creative industry, Utomwen brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He previously served as the chapter’s Publicity Secretary from 2019 to 2025 and is known for initiating impactful projects such as the SDGs Short Film Challenge & Awards — a national event that uses storytelling to inspire social change, promote emerging talent, and elevate local content on a global scale.
Utomwen has outlined four key areas his administration will prioritize: capacity-building and improved access to funding for members, the development of strategic partnerships both locally and internationally, enhanced welfare and inclusion within the association, and a focused drive to establish the FCT as a dynamic center for filmmaking in the country.
Joining Utomwen in the new executive council are Vice Chairman Alhaji Idris Aminu, Secretary Daniel Okwa, Publicity Secretary Eze Nnedinso Patience, Welfare Secretary Chiamaka Maureen Uchechi, and Social Secretary Mercy Maduka Nnochiri.
There is growing optimism among stakeholders and members of the association that Utomwen’s leadership will usher in a new era of growth, innovation, and expanded opportunities for filmmakers in the FCT.
