The Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory, Miller Dantawaye, has ordered the immediate redeployment of the Divisional Police Officer in charge of Ushafa Division after a viral video showed him slapping a young man during an arrest.

The video, which trended on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, sparked widespread anger among Nigerians who described the officer’s action as unprofessional and a violation of human rights.

In a statement released on Wednesday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the commissioner condemned the DPO’s conduct, describing it as unacceptable and against the core values of the Nigeria Police Force.

“The Commissioner of Police strongly condemns the officer’s actions, which fall short of the high standards of discipline, civility, and professionalism expected of police officers,” the statement read.

Adeh confirmed that the officer had been redeployed to the command headquarters pending the outcome of an investigation into the incident.

“Consequently, the officer has been redeployed, and the situation is currently under investigation,” she said.

Dantawaye also warned all Divisional Police Officers and their subordinates to remain professional and law-abiding while carrying out their duties, stressing that any act of misconduct would attract strict disciplinary measures.

“While administrative disciplinary steps are being taken, CP Dantawaye reminds all DPOs and their subordinates that they must remain professional, courteous, and law-abiding in the discharge of their duties. Any act of misconduct or abuse of power will attract severe sanctions,” Adeh added.

The police commissioner further urged residents to cooperate with law enforcement officers and maintain mutual respect to enhance community policing and public safety.

“Mutual respect and cooperation are essential for effective community policing and public safety,” Dantawaye stated.

The FCT Command also encouraged residents to report any suspicious activities or misconduct by officers to ensure accountability within the force.
