Ethiopian lawmakers have reappointed Abiy Ahmed as prime minister following his party’s victory in the country’s June elections.

According to AFP, parliament formally approved Abiy’s return to office during a televised session on Monday.

“Abiy Ahmed is hereby appointed as the prime minister of Ethiopia,” newly elected parliament speaker Ahmed Shide announced.

Abiy secures another term

The decision follows an emphatic electoral victory by Abiy’s political party earlier this year.

His reappointment allows him to continue leading one of Africa’s most populous countries during a period marked by economic pressures and lingering regional tensions.

Abiy has served as Ethiopia’s prime minister since 2018.

His tenure has included major political reforms as well as armed conflict, particularly the devastating war involving federal forces and authorities in the northern Tigray region.

Monday’s parliamentary decision formally begins another term for the Ethiopian leader.
