Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has announced plans to introduce an electric vehicle public transport system called the Abia Green Shuttle Service before the end of the year.
According to a statement issued on Saturday by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, the initiative is aimed at modernising public transportation and promoting environmental sustainability in the state.
“The Abia Green Shuttle Service is part of Governor Otti’s broader and futuristic vision for a modern and sustainable public transportation system, which aligns with global best practices, climate change and environmental sustainability goals,” the statement said.
Ukoha explained that the state government plans to acquire 100 electric buses that will operate within Aba, Umuahia and Ohafia. He said the first batch of 20 buses, along with 10 charging stations designed to include access for persons with disabilities, will become operational before the end of 2025.
“The first batch of 20 electric buses acquired by the state with 10 charging infrastructure equipped with persons with disability solutions will be operational before the end of the year. A second batch of the same quantity is expected to be delivered by early next year with an additional 10 charging infrastructure,” he said.
He added that new modern bus stops were nearing completion in Aba and Umuahia to improve passenger comfort and service efficiency, while route mapping for the shuttle system was ongoing.
Ukoha also noted that the project would rely on renewable energy to reduce dependence on the national grid. “The state’s sustainable transport system project will reduce dependence on grid electricity by utilising solar power and battery storage,” he said.
The statement said the initiative is expected to improve road safety, create jobs and boost economic growth.
“It will enhance road safety and reduce accidents by having designated bus stops including creating employment opportunities and stimulating economic growth of the state,” Ukoha added.
He described the project as a major step in Abia’s development plan, saying it represents the governor’s commitment to clean energy and modern infrastructure.
“Governor Otti’s plan for a sustainable transport system is comprehensive and promising. The green shuttle public transport service initiative demonstrates a commitment to modernising transportation, promoting sustainability and improving citizens’ quality of life,” Ukoha said.
