The Abia State Government has issued a warning to private tertiary institutions in the state not to compromise on educational standards.

This warning came from the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Eme Uche Eme, during a Stakeholders’ Forum at Amadeus University in Amizi, Ikwuano Local Government Area. Prof. Eme threatened sanctions against any institutions that do not meet the required standards.

Prof. Eme encouraged Amadeus University, which is set to begin operations soon, to align with the ongoing educational reforms led by Governor Alex Otti’s administration. She highlighted that for the first time in the state’s history, the administration has met the 25% budgetary allocation for education.

“The state is committed to upholding the highest standards with regard to education at all levels,” Prof. Eme said. She praised Dr. Godwin Nwabunka, the Founder of Amadeus University, for establishing the institution, saying, “Amadeus University is not just another addition to our educational landscape; it is a beacon of hope and a symbol of our determination to provide a world-class education that is accessible to all.”

The Vice Chancellor of Amadeus University, Prof. Samuel Nzotta, assured the stakeholders that the university, which is set to start full academic activities, aims to enhance the quality of education in Nigeria. “The university was established with a clear vision of producing globally competitive and practically-oriented graduates that will positively impact societal sustainable development,” he said. Prof. Nzotta also noted that the institution has secured full accreditation for 19 programmes across 13 departments and four faculties.

Prof. Nzotta added, “The university is positioned to be a global brand and shall provide opportunities for the students to become visionary, skilled, and development-oriented leaders with innovative and entrepreneurial skills.”

Former Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo and Chairman of the National Universities Commission (NUC) Standing Committee on Private Universities expressed satisfaction with the quality of facilities at Amadeus University.

His Royal Highness, Eze Ozo Ananaba, the Traditional Ruler of Amizi Autonomous Community, pledged the full support of the host community. “Our community will do all that is required of it. We are grateful that this university is sited on our soil by our silent-achiever son,” the monarch said.

Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, the Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, urged tertiary institutions in Nigeria to offer entrepreneurship courses and skills acquisition programs to foster self-reliance among graduates.

“Society needs job creators, not job seekers,” he emphasized. Speaking about Amadeus University, he added, “We envision a university that would not only educate but also inspire; we envision a place where students would be turned into leaders, entrepreneurs, and change-makers; a place that will not be associated with cultists or notorious individuals; a place where ideas will be formed and dreams realized.”

Prof. Oloyede, represented by Juliet Anikwe, the Abia State Coordinator of JAMB, confirmed that Amadeus University has received all necessary approvals and licenses from JAMB and the NUC. “Amadeus University is NUC approved and accredited, JAMB approved, JAMB accredited, and enjoys JAMB partnership,” he said, expressing confidence that the university will fulfill its mission of providing quality education.
