The Nigerian Medical Association, Federal Capital Territory chapter, has confirmed the release of Dr. Chinonye Vera Nwachukwu, a young doctor who spent nearly three weeks in the hands of kidnappers.
Nwachukwu, a Ukraine-trained medical doctor, was abducted on October 21, 2025, while on her way to Garki Specialist Hospital in Abuja.
Her abduction caused widespread concern among colleagues, family members, and the medical community, prompting the NMA-FCT to appeal to security agencies for swift action.
In a statement released on Monday by the association’s chairman, Dr. Emeka Ayogu, Nwachukwu was found in Gwagwalada late Sunday night and is currently receiving medical care.
“After almost three weeks in captivity, Dr. Nwachukwu has been freed by her abductors. She was rescued safely in Gwagwalada and is now receiving medical attention,” Ayogu said.
He added that the doctor would soon be reunited with her family and thanked everyone who offered prayers and support during the ordeal.
Ayogu also appreciated the security agencies and stakeholders who helped in securing her release, describing the development as a victory for the NMA-FCT and Nigeria’s entire medical community.
He prayed for continued safety for medical practitioners, saying the association hoped such an incident would not happen again.
