The management of Ambrose Alli University in Ekpoma, Edo State, has suspended all academic activities with immediate effect due to ongoing student unrest and protests.
The 40th Matriculation Ceremony of the University, scheduled for today, has also been postponed indefinitely.
According to a memo issued by the Acting Registrar, Ambrose Odiase, the resolution to shut the institution was made at an emergency meeting of the University Senate to address the continued student protests.
“In order to prevent a total breakdown of law and order as well as the need to guarantee the safety of lives and property in the University community and its environs, Senate was left with no other choice than to direct an immediate suspension of academic activities”. Part of the memo reads
The memo also stated that all students residing in campus hostels have been instructed to vacate their residence halls within 24 hours.
The student protests were sparked by an alleged increase in school fees for returning students, which led to the dissolution of the Student Union Executive. However, the University has denied increasing tuition fees for returning students.
