The immediate past president of Nigeria, Goodluck Jonathan is a big name in African democracy.
He is currently attending he 20th Anniversary Symposium of the Electoral Institute for Sustainable Democracy in Africa (EISA) in Johannesburg, South Africa.
The former president is meeting with great political players in the world. He is in the meeting with Cyril Ramaphosa, Deputy President of the Republic of South Africa; , grandson of President Jimmy Carter and BOT Chair of the Carter Center.
The former president said at the event: As Africa’s democratic space broadens year after year, institutions such as EISA are forever critical in achieving a fully democratic Africa I am saddened to see that Africa still struggles to elect its leaders.
“For African countries to develop, we must foster free, fair and credible elections. Our leaders must have the required credibility to govern. African leaders must ensure that their Elections Management Bodies are truly independent to allow credible elections.
“Africa is indeed ripe for democracy, despite a few remaining grey areas and I trust that with EISA and others we will reach the promise land.”
