8 things to know about the late Kenule Bornale Saro-Wiwa
On Tuesday night, news about the death of Kenule Bornale Saro-Wiwa, better known as Ken Saro-Wiwa Jr filtered in. It was a devastating news for all that knew him.
Yet many people didn’t know who he was. All they knew was that he was the son of one of Nigeria’s foremost environmental activist Ken Saro-Wiwa who was dubiously tried and executed in 1995 under the late General Sanni Abacha regime.
Here are a few things to know about the late Saro-Wiwa Junior.
1. Kenule Bornale Saro-Wiwa was born in November 28, 1968.
2. After a few years of basic education in Nigeria, he proceeded to Stancliffe Hall School and Tonbridge School in England and later the School of Slavonic and East European Studies, which is now part of University College, London.
3. He served as editor of the UK Guardian′s New Media Lab
4. Like his father, he was a writer. Apart from the Guardian UK, he was a contributor to CNN,Toronto Globe and Mail, Washington Post, New York Times and National Geographic.
5. He was the Founding Curator of the Abuja Hub for the Globalshapers Programme of the World Economic Forum and has also served on the Africa Advisory Council of the Prince of Wales Rainforest Project.
6. He served as Special Assistant to President Olusegun Obasanjo on peace, conflict resolution and reconciliation. He served as aide to President Umaru Yar’Adua as the Special Assistant on International Affairs. He also worked with Former President Goodluck Jonathan.
7. He was married with two sons.
9. His memoir of his father, In the Shadow of a Saint, won the 2002 Hurston-Wright Nonfiction Award.
