Two pilots have been confirmed dead when a Swiss military helicopter crashed in the south-east of Switzerland at around midday on Wednesday.
According to the head of the Swiss Air Force, Aldo Schellenberg, a flight assistant was also injured in the tragic incident.
Schellenberg said this when he was confirming the number of victims to the media at a press conference in Bern on Wednesday afternoon, adding that he was “deeply shocked”.
Reports say the aircraft crashed onto the Gotthard pass road, close to the hotel, ‘Ospizio San Gottardo’ (St Gotthard Hospice).
The incident occurred over a month after a Swiss Air Force F/A 18 jet crashed on August 29, killing the pilot.
A Switzerland website, Swissinfo.ch reports that there have been 12 accidents involving Swiss Air Force jets or helicopters over the past 20 years. Killing 21 people.
