A support group affiliated with the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Kwankwasiyya Amana X (KAX), has faulted the Independent National Electoral Commission over its failure to include the National Democratic Congress governorship candidate in Kano State, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, and other party candidates in its published list for the 2027 elections.
In a statement released on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the group expressed concern that INEC had yet to address the omissions despite the expiration of a 72-hour ultimatum issued by the NDC on October 14.
According to KAX, the deadline elapsed on October 17, but the commission’s published list remained unchanged as of October 20.
“We are once again expressing deep concern over the continued omission of Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, the NDC governorship candidate in Kano State, from INEC’s published list. Despite the 72-hour ultimatum issued by the NDC on 14 October 2026, which expired on 17 October, no corrective action has been reflected in the published list as of today, 20 October 2026.”
The group said the failure to resolve the matter within the stipulated period had heightened concerns about the electoral commission’s handling of the issue.
“Three days after the deadline expired, INEC’s continued silence and failure to address this matter remain unacceptable.
“INEC’s failure to address this matter raises serious questions about its transparency, responsiveness and commitment to electoral fairness,” the group said.
KAX also referred to a demonstration organised by the Kwankwasiyya Movement at INEC’s Kano State headquarters on October 16. The protest was led by Mustapha Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, the NDC deputy governorship candidate, with participants demanding the inclusion of Gwarzo and other party candidates left out of the list.
During the demonstration, Kano State Resident Electoral Commissioner Abdu Zango reportedly confirmed that the commission had received the protesters’ petition and would transmit it to INEC’s national headquarters for consideration.
Zango also informed the protesters that the window for appeals would remain open until October 24.
The dispute arose following INEC’s publication of its final list of governorship candidates for the 2027 elections, which reportedly did not feature Gwarzo and his running mate under the Kano State section.
Against this backdrop, KAX called on the electoral commission to amend the list, restore the names of all duly nominated NDC candidates who were omitted and provide an explanation for their absence.
“We therefore call on INEC to immediately correct its published list, reinstate all duly nominated NDC candidates whose names were omitted, and publicly clarify the reasons for these omissions,” the statement said.
The group further cautioned that prolonged inaction could affect public trust in the electoral process, urging the commission to address the matter without further delay.
“INEC must not allow further delays to undermine public confidence in the electoral process. The Commission must act promptly, transparently and in accordance with the law,” it added.
