The Federal Government, working with the Imo State Government, will temporarily close the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport in Owerri for about 25 days starting October 20, 2026, to carry out runway repairs and extension works.
Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the closure in a press statement, stressing that the work is critical to ensure aviation safety, increase capacity, and improve operations ahead of the usual Christmas travel surge to the South-East.
The rehabilitation project will fix deteriorated sections of the runway pavement, treat widespread surface cracks, and fill potholes. Alongside resurfacing, the planned runway extension aims to upgrade the airport’s capacity to handle larger, wide-body aircraft, subject to regulatory requirements.
The decision followed an agreement between the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, Imo State Governor Senator Hope Uzodinma, and other regional stakeholders. Keyamo praised the partnership between the federal and state governments, noting that a modernised airport will serve as a key gateway for businesses and support the region’s economic development.
The Ministry acknowledged the disruption the closure will cause to airport users but stressed that aviation safety cannot be compromised. The temporary shutdown is needed to allow contractors unhindered access to carry out the upgrades effectively.
Passengers scheduled to travel through Owerri during the 25-day closure are advised to contact their airlines immediately to arrange flight cancellations, rescheduling, or alternative travel plans. The government promised to keep engaging with airlines and stakeholders to reduce disruptions, with confirmed reopening dates to be shared through official channels.
