Veteran Nollywood actor, Ramsey Nouah, has opened up about his family roots, revealing that he comes from a mixed-race background, with a Lebanese father and a Nigerian mother from Ondo State.
The 55-year-old actor made the revelation during an interview on the popular programme Curiosity Made Me Ask, which aired on Saturday, October 3, where he also explained why he speaks Yoruba fluently despite his mixed heritage.
Nouah, who was born and raised in Lagos, attributed his strong command of the Yoruba language to his maternal background, noting that his mother hails from Ondo State.
“I speak Yoruba so well because I’m a Yoruba boy. I was born and bred in Lagos. My mum is from Ondo, but I’m mixed-race because my father is Lebanese,” he said.
The actor began his professional acting career in the 1990s and has established himself as one of the prominent figures in Nigeria’s film industry. Over the years, he has received several nominations and accolades for his performances in Nollywood productions.
His role in The Figurine earned him the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2010, further cementing his reputation as one of the industry’s leading actors.
Nouah subsequently expanded his career beyond acting and ventured into filmmaking as a director. He made his directorial debut with Living in Bondage: Breaking Free in 2019 and has remained involved in directing projects within the Nigerian film industry.
In a recent comment on the economics of filmmaking, the Nollywood veteran also questioned the financial viability of releasing movies in cinemas, arguing that the approach does not always guarantee that producers will recoup their investments.
According to Nouah, filmmakers can spend substantial amounts on publicity and promotional campaigns without necessarily recovering the money invested in producing and marketing their movies.
