A female police inspector has died after a hit-and-run driver reportedly knocked her down in an incident now being referred to as the Lagos policewoman hit-and-run. This happened while she was on duty ahead of President Bola Tinubu’s arrival in Lagos.

According to The PUNCH, Inspector Mercy Bassey was deployed for route-lining duty. A black Highlander SUV struck her around the Adekunle intersection of the Third Mainland Bridge.

Bassey was attached to the Ikotun Divisional Police Station.

Driver yet to be identified

A security source said Bassey was crossing the road inward Lagos Island when the incident happened.

The registration number of the SUV and the identity of the driver were not immediately known.

The officer had been deployed as part of security arrangements for the President’s movement. This followed his return to Lagos from Europe.
