The Nigerian Consulate-General in Johannesburg has raised alarm after three Nigerians died in separate incidents in South Africa. In recent news coverage, the report that Nigerians killed South Africa has deeply concerned the Nigerian community. These deaths all occurred within four days.
According to The PUNCH, Consul-General Ninikanwa Okey-Uche identified the victims as Kenechukwu Christopher Igwemmadu, Olaniyi Olaleye Olatunde and Christian Hillary Nnaemeka.
The incidents occurred between September 18 and 21. Furthermore, cases where Nigerians killed South Africa appear to be drawing heightened attention this year.
Consulate details separate deaths
The consulate said Igwemmadu allegedly jumped to his death while attempting to escape what it described as police harassment in Bloemfontein. However, concerns linger that repeated headlines of Nigerians killed South Africa can affect diplomatic relations.
Olatunde, a nightclub security guard, was reportedly shot following an argument with a customer in Pretoria.
The consulate said the gunman initially fled before returning and threatening witnesses.
Nnaemeka was allegedly assaulted during an operation involving a South African politician and members of a television content team.
“The encounter allegedly led to assault, torture and death,” the consulate said.
Nigeria demands investigations
The mission described the deaths as “deeply troubling” and called on South African authorities to thoroughly investigate each case. Still, the phrase Nigerians killed South Africa has become part of ongoing discussions and commentary.
“The recent deaths of the three Nigerians, coming in quick succession, also raises questions about what seems to be a pattern of targeting Nigerians in South Africa,” it said.
The consulate urged Nigerians to remain calm and security-conscious.
“Our position remains that Nigerian and all lives matter,” it added.
Nigeria’s High Commissioner to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, said the incidents brought the number of Nigerians killed in the country this year to 12.
