Nigeria Premier Football League club Ikorodu City have deleted a social media post welcoming NDC presidential candidate Peter Obi to their match against Rangers at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
According to The Guardian, Obi attended Sunday’s NPFL encounter. He was joined by Lagos Central senatorial candidate Ladipo Johnson. Also present was Lagos Island Constituency II House of Representatives candidate Aisha Jimoh.
The club had initially shared a post on X welcoming Obi to the stadium. He sat in the VVIP section with club president Sanmi Doherty.
The post was later deleted after Ikorodu City defeated Rangers 2-0.
Ikorodu City gives no reason for deletion
No official reason was given for the removal of the post.
Football journalist Olawale Adigun questioned the decision. He argued that visits by prominent personalities could help generate more attention for the domestic league.
“You could Famz the Politician, then suddenly you had a brain fart moment and realised his audience were taking advantage of it, which is not even true,” Adigun wrote.
He argued that the club could have used Obi’s presence to boost visibility for the NPFL. Instead, they removed the post.
Ikorodu City had earlier secured all three points against Rangers with a 2-0 victory at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
