Premier League champions Arsenal made an emphatic start to their title defence on Friday, sweeping newly promoted Coventry City aside 3-0 at the Emirates Stadium.

According to Reuters, Kai Havertz, Bukayo Saka and captain Martin Odegaard were all on target as Mikel Arteta’s side dominated their opening match of the 2026/27 Premier League season.

Havertz opens Arsenal’s account

Arsenal needed just 15 minutes to break through Coventry’s defence, with Havertz calmly steering Riccardo Calafiori’s cross into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.

The early goal settled the champions and allowed them to take greater control of possession as Coventry struggled to contain Arsenal’s movement in the final third.

Eight minutes later, new signing Christos Tzolis played a major role in Arsenal’s second goal on his Premier League debut.

Declan Rice released the Greek international down the flank following a quick break from defence. Tzolis delivered a low cross that Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth could only parry into the path of Saka, who converted from close range to make it 2-0.

Odegaard kills off Coventry hopes

Coventry, back in the Premier League after a 25-year absence, managed to survive further Arsenal pressure before half-time and came close to pulling one back with a looping overhead kick that briefly troubled goalkeeper David Raya.

Any hope of a second-half comeback, however, disappeared just four minutes after the restart.

Odegaard found space inside the area and produced a finish that wrong-footed Rushworth to give Arsenal a commanding three-goal advantage.

The hosts continued to create opportunities after the third goal and could have extended their lead as Arteta’s side maintained control of the contest.

Coventry were presented with a late opportunity to grab a consolation when a cross found Jack Rudoni unmarked, but his header went straight into Raya’s hands.

Champions make early statement

The victory gives Arsenal the perfect opening to a campaign in which they are attempting to retain the English top-flight title for the first time since 1935.

Arteta had warned before the season that his players must embrace being the team everyone wants to beat following last season’s championship success.

Their first league performance suggested the champions are prepared for that challenge, with Arsenal combining attacking sharpness with another clean sheet following their 3-0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City.

Tzolis also made an immediate impression in his first Premier League appearance, while Saka, Havertz and Odegaard ensured three of Arsenal’s established attacking figures began the campaign with goals.

Coventry face Premier League reality

For Frank Lampard’s Coventry, the defeat provided an immediate indication of the step up required after returning to the top flight for the first time in a quarter of a century.

The visitors spent long periods defending against Arsenal’s pressure but continued competing and created opportunities of their own late in both halves.

Arsenal, however, proved far too strong on the opening night and leave their first fixture with three goals, three points and an early statement to the rest of the Premier League.
