The music of late South African icon Johnny Clegg has been given a new life. This is through a tribute album featuring some of the country’s leading contemporary musicians.

According to the Houston Chronicle, the project, titled “Scatterlings: Johnny Clegg Reimagined,” brings together artistes including Msaki, Jesse Clegg, Beatenberg, Sun-El Musician, Tresor and the Zolani Youth Choir.

New generation reworks Clegg classics

Rather than simply reproduce Clegg’s original recordings, the artistes have reinterpreted his songs through genres including jazz, Afro-house, indie rock and contemporary African pop.

Some tracks retain elements of the original arrangements. However, others have been significantly reconstructed to introduce Clegg’s catalogue to younger listeners.

The project also features Jesse Clegg, the late singer’s son.

Album celebrates anti-apartheid music pioneer

Clegg became an influential figure in South African music after forming Juluka with Zulu guitarist Sipho Mchunu during apartheid.

The racially integrated group challenged South Africa’s segregation policies while blending Zulu musical traditions with Western pop and rock influences.

Clegg later became recognised internationally for songs including “Scatterlings of Africa” and “Great Heart.”

Musicians create generational conversation

Msaki and Jesse Clegg described the project as an attempt to create a conversation between generations of South African musicians. They did not want to simply produce another tribute record.

Different artistes therefore approached the songs according to their individual styles.

Clegg died in 2019 after battling pancreatic cancer, leaving behind a career that combined music, cultural research and activism.

The new album is now available across major music streaming platforms.
