Egyptian security forces have rescued a student who used a Facebook livestream to call for help. He allegedly did this while being held captive inside the back of a refrigerated truck.
According to Al Jazeera, the student livestreamed his kidnapping from inside the vehicle. This drew attention to his situation and prompted security authorities to intervene.
Authorities began investigating after footage circulated online showing the student inside the truck. In the video, he could be heard appealing to security forces for help.
Police trace student after livestream
The incident was reported after the student’s father, a food warehouse owner in Qalyubia, informed police. He said that his son had allegedly been kidnapped by two food merchants.
Preliminary investigations indicated that the alleged kidnapping was connected to a financial dispute involving the victim’s brother.
Authorities said the brother had allegedly obtained goods from the two merchants without paying for them.
Security forces subsequently tracked down the vehicle and arrested two brothers from Shubra El-Kheima suspected of carrying out the abduction.
Student rescued, suspects arrested
The student was rescued unharmed following the police operation, while the vehicle allegedly used in the kidnapping was also recovered.
Authorities said the two suspects admitted during questioning that they abducted the student because of the financial dispute.
Legal proceedings have since begun against the suspects as Egyptian authorities continue their investigation.
The incident attracted widespread attention after the student’s decision to livestream from captivity. This helped alert the public and security agencies to his location and situation.
