Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called on Senator Francis Fadahunsi to apologise over comments allegedly threatening members of the Accord Party ahead of Saturday’s governorship election in Osun State.
Fadahunsi, who represents Osun East Senatorial District, faced backlash following the emergence of a video in which he allegedly instructed his supporters to “kill” Accord Party members before the election.
The senator subsequently rejected claims that he was advocating physical attacks, saying his reference was to supporters “kill Accord” through their votes.
In a statement titled, “Senator Francis Fadahunsi’s Incendiary Rhetoric Ahead of the Osun Election,” Obi said the alleged comments were disturbing and should not be tolerated.
According to him, Fadahunsi’s position as a senior member of the National Assembly places both constitutional and moral obligations on him to encourage peaceful conduct and respect democratic principles.
“As a high-ranking lawmaker representing the people in the National Assembly, Senator Fadahunsi carries a solemn constitutional and moral responsibility to promote peace, uphold democratic norms, and foster unity,” Obi said.
Obi cautioned that provocative political statements could escalate tensions, discourage voters and create conditions capable of leading to violence during the electoral process.
“Resorting to threats of force or disruption undermines the integrity of our electoral process, disrespects the electorate, and threatens the fragile peace of the state,” he said.
He consequently asked Fadahunsi to withdraw the remarks and apologise to the people of Osun State ahead of the election.
“I therefore respectfully demand that Senator Fadahunsi retract these harmful statements and tender an apology to the peaceful people of Osun State,” Obi said.
The former Anambra State governor further appealed to political parties, their supporters and other stakeholders to avoid provocative language and demonstrate restraint as the electorate prepares to choose the next governor.
He also urged security agencies to pay close attention to inflammatory political statements and ensure adequate protection for voters, election officials and other residents before, during and after Saturday’s election.
“The democratic mandate belongs to the people, and no individual, regardless of status or political office, should attempt to subvert the will of the people through fear or coercion,” he said.
Obi also urged residents of Osun State to remain peaceful and make use of their constitutional right to vote without fear or intimidation.
