At least 12 people have been killed and 39 others wounded after a Ukrainian drone strike hit Nizhnekamsk in Russia’s central Tatarstan region. This region is more than 1,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border. The Ukraine drone strike Russia incident has drawn significant attention due to the distance involved.
According to AP News, regional authorities confirmed the casualties on Monday. In addition, Russia reported one of the deadliest single Ukrainian attacks on its territory since the war began more than four years ago.
“According to the latest information, 12 people have been killed and 39 wounded as a result of the drone attack,” the Tatarstan regional press service said.
Ukraine drone strike hits Russian energy region
Tatarstan is a major Russian energy-producing region with several oil refineries and industrial facilities. These facilities have increasingly become targets of Ukrainian long-range attacks.
Unverified footage shared on social media showed a large cloud of black smoke rising near an oil facility in Nizhnekamsk following the strike.
Russia’s defence ministry said its forces shot down 456 Ukrainian drones overnight. However, it did not disclose how many drones successfully reached their targets.
Tatarstan authorities had earlier described the assault as a “massive” drone attack.
The latest strike comes as Russia and Ukraine intensify long-range attacks against each other. Civilian casualties are rising as the conflict continues.
Russian strike kills five in Kharkiv
Hours after the attack in Tatarstan, Ukrainian authorities said Russian artillery killed five people in the village of Bugaivka in the northeastern Kharkiv region.
“On August 10, Russian forces carried out a massive artillery strike on the residential area of the village of Bugaivka in the Chuguiv district,” the regional prosecutor’s office said.
“Various houses were destroyed as a result of the enemy attack. Five people were killed.”
Officials also released an image showing a house reduced to rubble following the bombardment.
Elsewhere, a woman was reportedly killed in a Ukrainian attack on Russia’s Belgorod region. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials said a Russian drone strike on a taxi killed a man in the frontline Kherson region.
Ukraine’s air force also reported that Russia launched 126 drones during its own overnight assault.
The latest deaths highlight the growing reach of the war. Both countries increasingly rely on drones and long-range weapons to strike targets far beyond the immediate front lines.
