Nigeria’s Goodness Nwachukwu produced a world-record throw of 39.66 metres to retain her women’s discus title at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
According to Commonwealth Sport, the Goodness Nwachukwu world record was the first recorded in the track-and-field programme at this year’s Games. Her performance also earned Nigeria its seventh gold medal of the competition.
Nwachukwu had already secured first place in the women’s discus F42-44/F61-64 event before delivering her record-breaking final effort at Scotstoun Stadium.
The Nigerian improved her previous world mark by more than three metres, completing a commanding title defence four years after winning gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
Nwachukwu celebrates emotional victory
The scale of the achievement became clear as Nwachukwu celebrated emotionally after officials confirmed the distance.
Her 39.66m effort surpassed the 36.56m mark she recorded during her triumphant campaign at Birmingham 2022, where she broke the world record twice.
Nwachukwu entered the Glasgow final as the defending champion and one of Nigeria’s leading medal prospects. She lived up to expectations by dominating the competition and producing the standout performance of the event.
The victory also strengthened Nigeria’s medal campaign and added another major honour to the country’s Para athletics record.

The Goodness Nwachukwu world record became one of the biggest moments of Day Six at the Commonwealth Games.
Commonwealth Sport said her performance reflected the impact of its GAPS programme, which supports emerging athletes and coaches through training and access to resources.
Nwachukwu had benefited from the programme before returning to the Commonwealth stage to defend her title.
Her success followed Nigeria’s strong start to the Games, particularly in Para sports, where the country’s athletes have delivered several medals and record-breaking performances.
The result also confirmed Nwachukwu’s position among the leading Para discus throwers in the world as she successfully defended her Commonwealth crown in record-breaking fashion.
