United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges. Trump backs Tinubu against terrorists in his statements on the situation. In particular, he noted attacks affecting Christian communities across the country.
In a letter dated July 6, 2026, Trump told Tinubu that it was an honour for the United States to support Nigeria in its fight against terrorists. He also commended Nigeria’s efforts to build a stronger and more prosperous nation.
Trump said cooperation between Nigeria and the United States had grown significantly. In particular, this growth was notable in areas involving security, intelligence sharing and military training.
He commended Tinubu’s leadership and determination to tackle the challenges facing Nigerians.
“I applaud your resolve to tackle the issues plaguing your nation, especially the violence affecting Christian communities, and it is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against terrorists,” Trump said.
The US president described relations between both countries as crucial at a time when armed conflicts and terrorist activities continued to spread across West Africa. Moreover, he also noted that these activities are spreading in other parts of the world.
According to Trump, both governments share the goal of confronting terrorism in all its forms. They work together through the US–Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap.
He said the agreement had created a framework for both countries to strengthen military cooperation. As a result, it would improve Nigeria’s ability to respond to security threats.
Trump also disclosed that the United States had deployed Special Operations Forces. They would assist the Nigerian military with training, equipment and intelligence.
He said the support would help members of the Armed Forces of Nigeria protect communities and improve the safety of citizens. Furthermore, it would protect people of faith who had suffered attacks.
“I am proud to have deployed United States Special Operations Forces—among the most elite military units anywhere in the world—to equip the brave citizens of the Armed Forces of Nigeria with the skills, tools and intelligence they need to protect your homeland,” he added.
Trump also expressed his willingness to continue discussions with Tinubu throughout his presidency.
The growing security partnership followed an agreement reached by both leaders in November 2025 to establish a Joint Working Group. This group is headed by the national security advisers of Nigeria and the United States.
The group reportedly agreed on measures including military training and intelligence sharing. They also agreed on coordinated operations against terrorist groups.
One of the major operations linked to the partnership was the May 16 attack on ISIS hideouts in the Lake Chad region.
The operation reportedly led to the death of the group’s leader, Abubakar Al-Minoki, alongside several of his associates.
The letter also came shortly after the US Assistant Secretary of State for Africa, Frank Garcia, visited Abuja. During the visit, he met senior Nigerian officials.
During the visit, Garcia pledged to deepen cooperation between Nigeria and the United States in security and other strategic areas.
