President Bola Tinubu has announced that his administration is set to deliver more than 10,000 housing units across 14 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as part of efforts to address Nigeria’s housing shortage.

The housing initiative, according to the President, is expected to generate more than 300,000 jobs while boosting economic activities within the sector.

Tinubu stated that ongoing government reforms are encouraging increased investment in housing through improved land administration, stronger financing mechanisms, better project structures and enhanced transparency.

He made the disclosure yesterday at the opening ceremony of the 20th Africa International Housing Show (AIHS) held in Abuja.

Represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, the President said the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration had progressed beyond policy development into practical implementation through strategic housing programmes and public-private partnerships.

He disclosed that the Renewed Hope Cities projects in Abuja, Lagos and Kano had reached various stages of development, adding that more housing estates and cities were also being constructed across the six geopolitical zones of the country.

According to a statement by Akume’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Yomi Odunuga, Tinubu described housing as more than a basic social need, noting that it remains an important economic asset that enhances productivity, promotes human dignity and contributes to national stability.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria recognises housing as a strategic national priority and is committed to sustained, whole-of-government support for the sector”, Tinubu said.

The President stressed that achieving effective housing delivery requires a coordinated approach involving land administration, financing, infrastructure development, urban planning, industry, social welfare and collaboration among different levels of government.

He added that his administration was expanding cooperation with private sector investors while improving access to long-term housing finance through institutions such as the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria.

Tinubu encouraged local and international investors to explore opportunities in Nigeria’s housing sector, assuring them of a favourable environment for investment.

“Nigeria welcomes serious partners who are ready to build, finance and innovate at scale”, he said.

The President further assured that Nigeria would continue to collaborate with continental organisations, including the African Union and Shelter Afrique Development Bank, in developing lasting solutions to Africa’s increasing housing challenges.

He also urged developers, financial institutions, manufacturers, policymakers and development partners to leverage the 20th anniversary of the Africa International Housing Show to strengthen cooperation and speed up efforts aimed at reducing the continent’s housing deficit.
