Nollywood actor, Jim Iyke, has stirred conversations on social media after sharing his views on the relationship between formal education and financial success.
Speaking during an appearance on Joey Akan’s podcast released on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, the actor argued that wealth creation is not solely dependent on classroom education, saying many of his most valuable financial lessons came from experienced traders and mentors rather than university lecturers.
Questioning the practical financial achievements of many academics, Iyke suggested that numerous students eventually surpass the lecturers who taught them in terms of economic success. He challenged the conventional belief that professors are the ultimate source of knowledge on building wealth.
“Can we even argue about the people who are our tutors, our professors? How many of them are really doing well in life? Haven’t you exceeded every tutor that ever sat in the classroom to tell you the dynamics of how to survive in the economic world?” he asked.
The actor also recalled a recent encounter with one of his former professors during a flight, using the experience to illustrate his perspective on financial achievement beyond academia.
“I met my professor recently, God bless his soul. We all knew who was doing better when we sat on that plane. I had to look back to greet him; he had to look forward to greet me. Somebody sat in business class, but that’s not the point,” he said.
Expanding on his point, Iyke maintained that the advice he received from successful businesspeople played a greater role in shaping his financial journey than what he learned in school.
“I’ll tell you what worked, it’s what the uncles spoke to me, the traders that barely went to school but amassed untold wealth. The father that sat in front of me and told me, ‘Forget all that book. This is a time to be ruthless, this is a time to conform, this is a time to stoop to conquer.’”
He further argued that academic qualifications are not the defining factor behind the success of many of the world’s richest individuals, stressing that practical knowledge and experience often outweigh formal credentials.
“Some of the wealthiest men in the world did not get it from classrooms. How many of them have PhDs? I have a PhD that works for me,” he added.
Jim Iyke, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Philosophy from the University of Jos, has built a reputation for expressing strong opinions on social and economic issues. His latest remarks come days after singer Ycee’s “Olodo Uprising” comment generated widespread reactions across social media.
