World Wrestling Entertainment Superstar, Billy Corgan, has shared his belief that one of The Undertaker’s most memorable trademark moments was inspired by Halloween villain Michael Myers.
Speaking with legendary horror filmmaker John Carpenter on an episode of “The Magnificent Others” podcast, the Smashing Pumpkins frontman explored the lasting appeal of Myers and how that mystery influenced The Undertaker’s legendary WWE persona.
Carpenter explained that Michael Myers has remained such a frightening character because very little is ever revealed about him, leaving audiences to fill in the blanks themselves.
Corgan: “You’ve talked about it before, but I thought it was fascinating when you talk about the character of Michael Myers, this idea of the blank face and the audience projecting onto that. Can you just talk about that a little bit?”
Carpenter: “He is a character who has really no past. He is nothing. He’s neither human nor supernatural. Both. Okay. And we don’t know. And that’s the thing that is disturbing.”
“We just don’t know what it is that drives him. So he’s blank, and he’s kind of unkillable, kind of, but maybe he’s not. So it’s that, uh, balance between those things that made him really spooky. So the less you know about Michael Myers, the scarier he is to you.”
Reflecting on the influence of Carpenter’s creation, Corgan pointed to one of Halloween’s most unforgettable scenes, suggesting it served as the blueprint for The Undertaker’s iconic sit-up.
Corgan: “This the scene that blew my mind as a kid was, I think it’s Jaime Lee Curtis is sort of panting in the foreground, and he’s in the back. It’s the Undertaker spot, which Undertaker, I think, stole from Michael Myers.”
Meanwhile, AJ Styles recently discussed the long-speculated dream match against Shawn Michaels during an episode of “The Phenomenally Retro” podcast. Styles admitted that the timing of their WWE careers prevented the showdown from ever becoming a reality.
According to Styles, sharing the ring with Michaels would have been more meaningful than the outcome of the match, saying he would have gladly accepted defeat simply for the opportunity.
“I would have taken the pin all day long to be able to be in the ring with Shawn Michaels. I don’t care. Because it wasn’t about that for me. It was about being in there and going, ‘Wow.’”
Styles also reflected on his admiration for The Undertaker, noting that arriving in WWE earlier could have led to several memorable encounters between them.
“And just kind of the same thing with The Undertaker. It’s like, ‘Man, the matches that we could have had had I just gotten here sooner.’ You know what I’m saying? Because the timing… I don’t know the way you gel together.”
He went on to reveal that he and Michaels have shared private conversations that he intends to keep confidential, emphasizing the respect he has for the WWE Hall of Famer.
“There’s some things that I have shared with him that I would never share with anybody else ever. And you’ll never know about it, but there’s something about some of the things he says and like, ‘Yeah, I understand that.’ You know, maybe not a lot of people would.”
