Chelsea have publicly addressed Enzo Maresca’s departure to Manchester City, claiming the Italian had made it clear months before his exit that he wanted to succeed Pep Guardiola at the Etihad Stadium.
According to GB News, the Premier League club released a detailed statement on Monday explaining the circumstances surrounding Maresca’s exit after City confirmed him as Guardiola’s replacement.
Chelsea said the former head coach first informed the club during the autumn that he could become Manchester City’s next manager and that it gradually became evident his focus had shifted away from Stamford Bridge.
The club also claimed Maresca unexpectedly resigned midway through the season despite having a long-term contract.
“Obviously, we felt let down as we believed that his head and heart were focused on another club and another opportunity,” the statement read.
Chelsea said they had no intention of changing managers during the campaign but felt compelled to act after Maresca indicated he would no longer continue in the role.
The club also confirmed that compensation agreements had been reached with both Manchester City and Maresca, although it did not disclose the financial terms of the settlements.
Chelsea described the 2025/26 season as “hugely disappointing,” adding that the uncertainty surrounding Maresca’s future contributed to the club’s struggles.
Turning their attention to the future, the Blues expressed confidence in new manager Xabi Alonso, describing him as possessing “an exceptional football mind” and praising what they called his “highest integrity.”
The statement comes shortly after Manchester City announced Maresca as Guardiola’s successor on a three-year contract.
