Retired Major General Rabe Abubakar has died while in the captivity of bandits, the Katsina State Government has announced.
According to a statement issued on Friday by the Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr Nasiru Mu’azu, the former senior military officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while being held by his abductors.
The statement, shared by X user @DejiAdesogan, described the development as a tragic loss to both Katsina State and the nation.
According to the government, efforts by security agencies and the state government to secure the retired general’s release were unsuccessful before his death.
“The deceased retired general died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement said.
The government noted that Abubakar’s abduction and subsequent death represented not only a loss to his immediate family and Katsina State but also a significant loss to the country.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, describing the incident as a dark moment and a reminder of the need for intensified efforts against criminal elements threatening peace and security.
He reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to working with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
The governor also assured residents that the government remained determined to eliminate banditry and safeguard lives and property across the state.
The Katsina State Government prayed for the repose of the late retired Major General and urged citizens to continue supporting security agencies in the fight against insecurity.
