Switzerland has expressed its readiness to host the formal signing of a possible peace agreement between the United States and Iran, according to the Swiss foreign ministry.
In a brief statement issued to AFP on Friday, the ministry said, “Switzerland is fully engaged. We are in close contact with the United States and Iran.”
The development comes as a senior official in the administration of Donald Trump disclosed on Friday that Washington was “80 to 85 percent” confident that a deal with Tehran aimed at ending the conflict could be concluded within the next few days.
The Swiss foreign ministry stated that it is actively involved in diplomatic efforts “to support efforts toward a Memorandum of Understanding intended to consolidate the truce and pave the way for de-escalation in the context of the conflict between Iran and the USA”.
It added that “has proposed Switzerland as the venue for a possible signing, should the parties agree to it”.
Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, whose country has played a mediating role in the peace process, announced on Friday that negotiators had reached an agreement on the text of a proposed peace deal.
