The family of late American rap icon Tupac Shakur has initiated a wrongful death lawsuit against Duane Keefe D Davis, a former gang leader currently facing murder charges over the 1996 killing of the artiste.
Filed in a Las Vegas court, the suit aims to hold Davis civilly accountable for the drive-by shooting that ended the rapper’s life nearly 30 years ago.
The legal action comes in the wake of Davis’s arrest in September 2023, following a series of public statements he made in interviews and in his memoir about his alleged involvement on the night of the shooting, according to Leadership.
Although Davis has entered a not guilty plea in the ongoing criminal proceedings, the Shakur family is pursuing damages over their loss.
Attorneys representing the estate stated that the civil case is an essential step toward achieving full accountability.
They maintain that Davis’s own public remarks constitute sufficient basis to link him to the conspiracy surrounding the fatal incident in Las Vegas.
Davis remains the only individual formally charged in connection with the killing.
While the criminal trial is scheduled to commence later this year, the family’s lawsuit will run separately, seeking both financial compensation and a formal court ruling establishing his responsibility.
