The Kano State Police Command has arrested a three-man tricycle theft syndicate and recovered eight stolen tricycles in different parts of the state.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Abdullahi Kiyawa, adding that the breakthrough followed an intelligence-led operation carried out by officers attached to the Kwakwachi Police Division.

Kiyawa said, “On March 26, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m., police officers on surveillance patrol along Airport Road, Kano, intercepted one Abubakar Sidi of Kunkumi Village, Kaduna State, riding a tricycle with registration number NSR 85 WD and KAROTA number KMC 1084.”

He explained that the suspect could not provide a satisfactory account of the tricycle, prompting his transfer to the Criminal Investigation Department on the directive of the Commissioner of Police for further investigation.

“Subsequent discreet investigation revealed that the suspect deceived the tricycle owner along Emir Palace Road, Kano, and conspired with members of his syndicate to dispossess the victim of the tricycle,” he said.

He added that the police later arrested two accomplices identified as Abba Babura and Babangida Haruna. “Following their arrest, seven additional tricycles stolen by the syndicate and sold in Babura, Jigawa State, were recovered,” the statement added.

The police spokesman said efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the syndicate, as well as trace the rightful owners of the recovered tricycles. Meanwhile, the command has advised tricycle operators and members of the public to remain vigilant, particularly in their interactions with passengers.

“We urge operators not to accept drinks or gifts from strangers and to promptly report any suspicious activities to the police,” Kiyawa said.

He also called on individuals whose tricycles were stolen under similar circumstances to visit the Police Public Relations Office at the Bompai headquarters or contact the investigating officer for identification and recovery.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, commended the officers involved in the operation for their professionalism and dedication, reiterating the command’s commitment to intensifying efforts to combat crime and ensure the safety of lives and property across the state.
