The Borno State Police Command has strongly denounced the assault on a nomadic settlement in Wuturo community, Konduga Local Government Area, reportedly carried out by suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP militants.
The attack, which took place late Monday night, resulted in one fatality, another person injured, and the theft of approximately 1,400 sheep by the assailants.
Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Nahum Kenneth Daso, stated that officials of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association in the area reported the incident to the Konduga Police Division.
Daso explained that the attackers, described as unidentified gunmen on five motorcycles, invaded the settlement around 10:30 p.m. on March 10 and opened fire on residents.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that during the attack, one Ahmadu Baida, 40, sustained fatal gunshot injuries, while another victim, Mohammadu Baida, 30, suffered a gunshot wound on his left leg,” he said.
He added that the gunmen also stole about 1,400 sheep from the herders before fleeing the scene.
The police spokesman said a joint security team, consisting of police, military personnel, Civilian Joint Task Force (CJTF), and local hunters, led by the Divisional Police Officer in Konduga, was immediately dispatched to the scene following the report.
According to Daso, the victims were taken to a hospital, where Ahmadu Baida was confirmed dead on arrival, while the injured individual is receiving treatment and showing positive signs of recovery.
He further revealed that the Borno State Commissioner of Police, CP Naziru Abdulmajid, has ordered intensified operations to apprehend the attackers and recover the stolen livestock.
“In response to the incident, the Command has activated coordinated operational strategies with relevant security agencies and community stakeholders to track down the perpetrators, prevent further attacks, and recover the rustled livestock,” he said.
Daso added that tactical and intelligence resources have been strategically deployed throughout the affected community and surrounding areas to reinforce security.
The police command extended condolences to the family of the deceased and reassured residents of its commitment to protecting lives and property across the state.
Residents were urged to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to security agencies immediately.
