Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has led a campaign tour within the Federal Capital Territory alongside members and supporters of the African Democratic Party ahead of the upcoming council elections.

Mr. Obi, who recently defected from the Labour Party to the ADC, made his first stop on Wednesday at the popular Kugbo furniture market, which was recently affected by a fire outbreak.

Disclosing the visit on his X handle, the former Anambra State governor wrote, “At a time when many Nigerian are grappling with deepening hardship and poverty, such losses are especially painful.”

He further assured traders at the market, who recounted their experiences following the devastating incident, that “despite the setbacks they faced, they will recover and thrive again with the right support.”

Mr. Obi also stated that “This incident once again underscores my consistent call for a comprehensive reform of our emergency response systems.”

“A nation that truly cares for its people must invest in efficient, well coordinated emergency services that respond promptly and effectively to crises saving lives and livelihoods,” he added.

The former governor visited the local market in the company of Moses Paul, the ADC chairmanship candidate for the Abuja Municipal Area Council election.
According to Mr. Obi, the visit was aimed at strengthening community engagement ahead of the polls, while stressing the importance of active citizen participation.

He added, “We must work towards a Nigeria where preventable tragedies are avoided, and where institutions operate effectively for the benefit of all.”
