Residents and commuters in Apapa, Lagos State, were seen scooping diesel on Monday after a tanker overturned on the Liverpool Bridge, inward Mile 2.
The incident, which caused traffic disruption in the area, was captured in a video circulating on social media. The footage showed people rushing with containers to collect the spilled diesel, despite the obvious danger.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, the fallen tanker was loaded with diesel and suffered damage to its tank, leading to a continuous spill on the bridge.
In a statement shared on its official X page, LASTMA said security and emergency agencies were alerted immediately.
“There’s a fallen tanker loaded with diesel on top Liverpool Bridge inward Mile 2. The diesel is spreading on the bridge as a result of the damaged tank,” the statement read.
LASTMA said operatives of the Nigerian Police Force from Area B, alongside other safety agencies, were swiftly notified to prevent a possible disaster.
Men of the Lagos State Fire Service and rescue team were also deployed to the scene to manage the situation and neutralise the spill.
“Traffic has been diverted to the other side of the bridge for safety measures. Pending the time of recovery, Liverpool Bridge has been cordoned off and counter-flow traffic control is in use,” the agency stated.
LASTMA warned motorists to obey traffic instructions, noting that vehicular movement along the corridor was very slow.
The agency added, “Please adhere strictly to all instructions from the traffic managers. Plan your movement.”
