Mozambique’s players and coaching crew have been promised a special bonus of 500,000 meticais each if they defeat Nigeria in the round of 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The offer, which is about N11.3 million per person, was announced by Mozambique’s President, Daniel Francisco Chapo, as he praised the team for reaching the knockout stage of the 2025 AFCON.
In a message to the players and officials, Chapo commended their performance during the group stage, describing it as inspiring to the nation.
“This accomplishment makes the entire nation proud,” the president said. “Your determination, bravery and hard work have brought renewed hope and excitement to football fans across Mozambique.”
He added that the extra bonus would be paid to every player and member of the coaching crew if the Mambas overcome the Super Eagles and qualify for the quarterfinals.
“The entire nation stands behind you, and we believe in your ability to triumph over Nigeria,” Chapo said.
Mozambique finished third in Group F to secure a place in the last 16, despite losing 2-1 to Cameroon’s Indomitable Lions in their final group match.
The president described the team’s progress as remarkable and worthy of recognition, noting that it marked a new achievement for Mozambican football on the continent.
Nigeria and Mozambique are scheduled to clash on Monday, January 5, at the Complexe Sportif de Fès, with a quarterfinal ticket at stake.
