The management of Kwara State University has requested that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq assist in constructing an overhead bridge on the Shao/Malete Road to reduce the frequent accidents recorded along the busy route leading to the campus.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Jimoh Shaykh-Lukman, appealed on Tuesday during the university’s pre-convocation press briefing in Malete.

He praised the governor for responding quickly to earlier calls to repair the Malete road, but stressed that the danger on the expressway had not reduced.

He said, “Some commercial and even articulated vehicles drive against the traffic in a bid to cut down on the distance to drive to make the turn. This constitutes a major hazard for all users of that road. We urge our visitor, Gov. AbdulRazaq, to use his good office to facilitate a flyover bridge for safe crossing of the express road.”

The VC also appealed for more internal road networks within the university.

He said, “Road infrastructure is beyond the ability of the university, and this is why we call on our proprietor, Gov. AbdulRazaq, to intervene in this area.”

Speaking on the upcoming 13th Convocation Ceremony scheduled for December 13, Shaykh-Lukman said the institution will award 8,119 degrees.

According to him, 7,618 students will receive first degrees, while 501 will graduate at postgraduate level.

He said, “There are 82 First Class honours, 1,986 Second Class Upper, 4,195 Second Class Lower, and 1,355 Third Class graduands. At the postgraduate level, there are 75 PhDs and 426 Master’s graduands.”

The VC also highlighted the university’s academic progress, noting that the Osi and Ilesha-Baruba campuses are now fully operational.

He added, “Both staff and students of the faculties in the two campuses have been integrated in these communities with lectures and research activities ongoing for the 2025/2026 session. This has facilitated the spread of the institution to other parts of the state with the expected socio-economic benefits to the communities hosting them.”

He explained that the university now runs 81 undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across its campuses and has continued to maintain a strong accreditation record.
