United States President Donald Trump has sharply rebuked Nigeria, expressing anger over what he describes as a widespread Christian genocide in the country.
Speaking on a conservative radio programme on Friday, as reported by Fox News, Trump accused the Nigerian government of failing to protect Christians from persistent attacks by Islamist extremists.
The US president, who had earlier designated Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” due to repeated reports of killings, said he was outraged by the situation and warned that his administration could have considered military intervention if the violence continued unchecked.
Trump went further, stating that the United States might suspend all aid to Nigeria.
“Nigeria is a disgrace. The whole thing is a disgrace. They’re killing people by the thousands. It’s a genocide, and I’m really angry about it. And we pay… we give a lot of subsidies to Nigeria. We’re going to end up stopping,” he said.
His comments come as global attention intensifies on targeted attacks against Christians in Nigeria, particularly in the northern and central regions, where abductions and deadly assaults are becoming increasingly frequent.
In recent reports, Politics Nigeria highlighted the kidnapping of 315 students and teachers from St. Mary’s Catholic School in Papiri, Niger State, after armed men stormed the school on more than 60 motorcycles accompanied by a van.
Separate incidents also saw 25 schoolgirls abducted in Kebbi State, while worshippers were killed and kidnapped during an attack on a church in Kwara State, adding to concerns over Nigeria’s deteriorating security environment.
