The Dangote Petroleum Refinery has dismissed a video trending on social media that claimed it was working with a firm to deliver petrol to motorists through dispatch riders.
The video, which spread online on Sunday, showed a man ordering petrol through a WhatsApp chat. A rider later arrived with a small fuel pump attached to his bike and dispensed fuel into the man’s car. The clip carried the name FuelUp and suggested the service was powered by Dangote Petroleum.
The footage drew mixed reactions. Some viewers praised the idea, while others raised worries about safety. A few online users also said the video looked computer generated.
When contacted, Dangote officials said the company had no link to the content. The Group Chief Communication Officer, Anthony Chiejina, told our correspondent, “Fake! We are not in any way associated with this.”
Another official explained that the refinery only supplies petrol to bulk buyers and has not signed any agreement with any firm to distribute fuel through motorcycles.
The viral video surfaced weeks after the refinery began using newly imported CNG trucks for its direct distribution scheme, a move aimed at improving supply across the country.
The refinery, located in the Lekki Free Trade Zone in Lagos, plans to increase its production capacity from 650,000 barrels per day to 1.4 million barrels per day. Dangote has also continued to invest in cleaner energy, automated systems, and improved logistics to strengthen fuel distribution.
The planned expansion is expected to help meet Nigeria’s rising demand for refined products and boost the country’s position in the regional energy market.
