The State Security Service has brought criminal charges against Innocent Onukwume, a 27-year-old man, for allegedly advocating for a military takeover of the Nigerian government.
Court documents filed on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja show that the SSS accused Onukwume, a resident of Umusayo Layout in Oyigbo Local Government Area of Rivers State, of committing the offense in October this year.
The security agency submitted the six-count charge, designated FHC/ABJ/CR/610/2025, through its legal representative, A. M. Danalami, on Tuesday.
According to the SSS, Onukwume’s actions violated provisions of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2024 (As Amended).
Onukwume, who stands as the only accused person in the case, is expected to appear before the court for arraignment this week.
The first count alleges that Onukwume, during October, published a message on his social media platform calling for a coup in Nigeria, with the intention of creating public fear and alarm or disrupting public order.
The SSS claims he made the post on his verified X account (@theagroman), stating: “A coup in Nigeria is needed. Dispose of APC, suspend the Nigeria government and join the AES. That is all we need now.”
The security service cited Section 59(1) of the Criminal Code Act, Cap 77, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as one of the legal provisions under which the offense is punishable, alongside additional counts in the charge sheet.
