Eight people, including five men, two women, and a child, were killed in a road accident on Wednesday night in Akungba-Akoko, Akoko South West Local Government Area of Ondo State, according to Channels report.
The Federal Road Safety Corps commander in the state, who confirmed the crash stated that the incident happened around 7:30 p.m. when a truck loaded with stone dust lost control and rammed into a barricade near the university gate.
He urged motorists to drive carefully during the ember months and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before traveling.
The victims’ bodies were taken to a nearby hospital morgue.
The Students’ Union PRO of Adekunle Ajasin University, Mosadoluwa Ajidagba, said the truck, belonging to Dangote Cement, had a brake failure while coming from Ikare.
He said about 10 people died in the crash and that the union had repeatedly warned against heavy trucks passing through the town.
The chairman of Akoko South West Local Government, Ayo Ajana, expressed sadness over the deaths and promised to work with state authorities to push for permanent safety measures in the area.
